The martial art known as Kung Fu is very old, yet very powerful. There are several different forms involved with Kung Fu, that only add to the power and mystique. Below, we will go over a majority of the different styles and forms that make up Kung Fu. White Crane style The spirit of the White Crane has led to what many martial artists consider to be the most graceful system of Kung Fu. The pattern for the White Crane style was patterned after a crane bird often found in marshes and open plains. The White Crane defense forms and attacks are nothing short of amazing, often known as "deadly beauty". Although the techniques within the White Crane style can take years to properly master, they simple...

Masters of Kung Fu
The term master is designated to the person who has spent his entire life trying to discover and master the martial art system and achieved it in his lifetime. His skills are superior and a highly skilled person is not always a master, when the older master retires a new one is appointed. Every classical system has a single master sometime even known as a grandmaster. Only a few masters are alive today since most of the systems are old and the original Kung Fu techniques are lost because the master passed away before teaching it to his students. There have been times that the students have claimed to be masters because the actual master didn't appoint one. For students that have just begun...
Occasionally I like to surf the web and usually I always find a similar question posted on Internet forums and question and answers sites. "What is the most practical martial art to learn for joining the police?" Well firstly, to answer this, I suppose you have to look at the work of a police officer. If a person is resisting arrest, an officer wants to control the situation by controlling the offender as quickly as possible. Unless the officers lives are in great danger, they don't want to be choking out there opponents, pulling them into a guard position or trying to break there ankles and knees with heel hooks, so styles that are based on this type of fighting are not so important to learn. Also...

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including striking and grappling. Modern mixed martial arts tournaments as a popular phenomenon emerged in 1993 with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, based on the concept of pitting different fighting styles against each other in competition with minimal rules in place, in an attempt to determine which system would be more effective in a real, unregulated combat situation. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, mixed martial arts events implemented additional rules for the safety of the athletes and to promote acceptance of the sport, while maintaining as much of the original no-holds-barred concept as...

Strengthen your mind and body by practicing a...
Martial arts are basically a set of physical and mental skills that are gradually taught, developed and polished by a trainer usually called "sensei" for Japanese arts and "sifu" in Cantonese. Martial arts translate as "the arts of war", and they consist of a multitude of weaponless combat techniques, focused primarily on self defense. Based on ancient wisdom and philosophy, martial arts not only strengthen the body of the adept, but they also fortify his mind and his spirit. In Eastern culture, self control, discipline, patience, awareness, are considered to be the traits of a true warrior, and martial arts mainly focus on developing these skills to practicing students. In ancient times, martial...
The exciting term, infopreneur, is becoming a hit among today's entrepreneurs who want to capitilise on the sea of opportunities available on the internet. An infopreneur, apparently combined from the two words "information" and "entrepreneur", refers to an entrepreneur who makes money by selling/sharing information on the web. Infopreneurs fall into two categories. One is where infopreneurs sell information which are created on their own. The other kind is whereby infopreneurs piggyback off information from certain sources, modify as their own and sell them. The selling part might not exactly refer to selling information to readers directly all the time. Instead, sometimes information will be made...

Aikido is one of the oldest form of martial arts. Founded by Morihei Ueshiba, aikido came about through the studies of many different kinds of traditional martial arts. In fact, is often perceived as a form of exercise or a dance because of some of its forms. It is also viewed by some quarters as some form of martial mesmerism. Aikido is even confused with Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, it is different in its essence. Still, its founder attributed his creation of aikido to the way, his master Sokaku Takeda, grandmaster of Daito Ryu, opened his eyes to the nature of Budo. What is aikido? Despite its many perceived forms, aikido is a Budo or martial arts. It is the refinement of the techniques that are being...
What is Martial Golf?
Sooner or later we all leave this earth. A part breaks down, a disease creeps in, an unfortunate accident happens. Many of those bad things that happen are totally out of our control, yet the truth is, the choices we make in our lives have a huge influence on the odds of them happening. Expecting our body to take care of us while living a destructive life style gets the same bad result as hitting range balls for hours thinking our golf game will improve. The key to getting a good result, in both cases, requires a fundamental change from an expectation process to actively living in conscious awareness. Making real changes scares a lot of people yet it is the only way to produce...

Thanks to several centuries of enlightened teachings by extraordinary men in the martial disciplines, we don't have to be restricted to lives of getting and spending, waiting in quiet desperation for the pain to cease. Most of us in the Arts focus on the tasks in front of our noses (the correct hand forms/kicks/body alignments), forgetting our option to consciously evolve along the way to physical perfection. Words are easy, but we can avoid just blowing mouth-wind here by listing some timeless guides for self-growth, followed by training suggestions: * The physical and cerebral functions die, while the spirit continues to grow. This is a no-brainer, but it's amazing how many clubs are satisfied...

My Kung Fu Master Is 200 Years Old
OK, if you're reading my articles regularly, you know that I like learning new martial arts styles. Mostly I've focused on the Northern Chinese styles, the ones based around Wudang Mountain. I learned the classical Snake Style Kung Fu as a change up from jiu jutsu, and then learned a bit about the Southern (or "modern") Snake Style that was created by Master Leung Tin Chu at the turn of the 20th century. Master Leung blended a lot of Shao Lin Kung Fu stances strikes with Wing Chun style fluid motions to create his Snake Style, and when I learned more about it, it got my curiosity piqued about Shao Lin style Kung Fu. Like the northern styles, Shao Lin Kung Fu is a blend of philosophical techniques...
Wing Chun - Chinese Martial Art
Brief History: Wing Chun (also known as Wing Tsun, Ving Chun or Ving Tsun) is one of the most popular types of Chinese martial arts. Though it's basically an unarmed combat technique, Wing Chun may include weapons as part of its course. The origin of Wing Chun can be traced back to China, but the real history of its creation has long been a topic of much debate. The most credible suggestion regarding the origin of Wing Chun dates back to 1700 AD in the Henan Shaolin Monastery. When the Qing forces raided and ravaged the Southern Shaolin temple, a nun named Ng Mui fled to the distant Daliang Mountains, the only survivor. Ng Mui already had knowledge of Kung Fu in the Shaolin temple, which she...
A new internet site called brings a new dimention to the not-so-ancient fighting style known as Krav Maga. With superstar support ranging from Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, as well as the Bourne Ultimatum movie series Krav Maga is spreading like wildfire as the "anyone can do it" martial art. "it was only a matter of time that we took all of our training online" says kravmagabootcamp.com's chief instructor Ran Nakash "as this is one of the most dynamic and evolving forms of combat known to man, a DVD series created 4 years ago on sale on Ebay is just not enough for someone who would like to stay current. The other issue is that some of the instruction out there is not of a high quality, or the...
Is Stress Making you Fat?
It's true, stress can make you fat. It's because of a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is always present in your body, but your body secretes it at higher levels when it's under stress. Cortisol has positive effects on when it's secreted in small amounts it gives you bursts of energy, increases memory function and lowers pain sensitivity. However, when secreted I larger amounts, Cortisol can have negative effects on your body and your health. It is necessary for us to reduce our stress level to keep cortisol levels under control. The thing is, we live in such a high-stress culture that some people's secretion of cortisol doesn't slow down and they live in a state of what is called...
Discover The Ancient Art Of Shaolin Kung Fu
The first time I saw Shaolin Kung fu techniques was while watching a martial arts movie. I loved the style of martial arts so much, that I watched the second movie and fell totally in love. There was something so riveting about watching the punches, kicks and jumps. Even though it was Hong Kong Hollywood, it looked so much more real than most martial arts you see. I've watched a lot of martial arts movies in my day. In fact, they're actually my favorite type of movie. Recently I saw Jet Li in Fearless. Though his style in that movie was wing chun. Why is kung fu my favorite form of martial art? Probably because of the exotic origin. It's a style practiced by monks. You wouldn't think monks would...

Martial Arts Cult Stars
Hollywood has a funny effect on film stars. Even on those from halfway around the world. Hollywood puts international celebrities on its own big screen, and suddenly they're bigger than life. Martial arts films may have originated in the Pacific Rim, but the degree of cult following they attained was pure Hollywood. There, film directors created a new class of movies built on martial arts moves and counter moves, good guys and bad guys, and questionable dubbing. In the process, they also produced a whole new generation of martial arts films, film stars and film fans. Of course, Hollywood has many of it's own western movie stars who have made it big busting martial arts moves. Chuck Norris...
Liz Posener, a Pankration and Muay Thai fighter from Vancouver B.C., has been busy turning some heads in the past few months. The 31 year old wife and mother of two began training in Pankration and Muay Thai in 1998 - two years after her first pregnancy with her baby daughter. Initially, she viewed the sport as "fun" and a great way to get back into shape. At the time, little did she know, that she was entering the world of MMA. Liz had participated in an MMA "Team Quest" mini camp. After three days of training with Randy Couture, Matt Lindland, Nate Quarry, and Robert Follis, she stated "I learned enough in the first 15 minutes to get my moneys worth." Two months after the camp, she was...
History of Wrestling
The history of wrestling can easily be traced back to its roots in the Mediterranean. The Ancient Greeks and Romans are credited with developing a number of different styles of wrestling that are still in use today. The sport is easily one of the most primitive sports that can be easily dated back to some five thousands years ago. Ancient Greeks formed the sport out of necessity as it was a means of training and developing soldiers into warriors. They used it in hand to hand combat which also doubled as a means of cardiovascular exercise. Ancient drawings and hieroglyphs mark the walls of some of the great Greek Palaces and stadiums with pictures of ancient wrestlers. Wrestling history became a...
Three Principles for Practicing Judo
Even a black belt judo man sometimes makes the mistake of trying to apply a throw before breaking his opponent's posture. If the opponent is also a black belt holder, he will react quickly to prevent the other man from applying a throw directly. Therefore the problem of how to break your opponent's posture is the first thing that must be studied. A. Break your opponent's posture before applying your throw: kuzushi (unbalancing opponent). It was Dr. Jigoro Kano who discovered this principle. In reporting his discovery, he said: 'Mr. Iikubo was over fifty years old at the time, but he was still strong, and I used to work with him often. Although I practiced my technique industriously, I could never...

Martial Arts: Helping Your Children Protect...
Did you know that a child is reported abducted or missing every 40 seconds in the United States and that most potential abductors make their first contact with the children they abduct within one quarter of a mile from their homes? With summer approaching and children having more time to play with friends during the day, it is now more important than ever to start (or continue) giving your children the tools they need to protect themselves: Never leave young children unattended anywhere and have older children practice a buddy system with their peers. Teach your children their full name, your name, your address and telephone number. Teach them how to dial and use 911 or your equivalent emergency...
Facts About Martial Arts for Kids (Part 5)
"Will my child become more violent from learning karate, jujitsu, or another martial art?" In a word, "No." Children learn self-control by practicing martial arts; and the code of conduct that is enforced, within the studio, is carried outside into every day life. The average martial arts school works with parents, and academic teachers, toward the goal of optimum student success. When you see a Karate demonstration team perform, that is not an indicator of the life skills taught within the Karate class. It is the "flashiest" component of Karate training, presented to capture the public attention. Ten minutes of kids using ancient weapons, breaking, and working in synchronized choreography, is...
Aikido - General Background
History: Aikido in its present form is a relatively recent innovation within the martial arts tradition. It was developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969), who was introduced to the classical martial arts as a boy by his father, Yoroku. He is known to have studied some martial arts, such as various styles of Ju-jitsu as well as Kenjutsu and the art of the spear. Philosophy: If we are attacked by a force and we apply force ourselves, a collision of energies ensues which results in disharmony. Thus, accordingly the stronger force wins. If, however, we meet the force with an absorbing movement and then exhaust it to the point of imbalance before applying a force of...

Train harder!" What does this mean? Chi (also spelled qi) is often translated as "life force." It is similar to what we in the West mean by "energy," but it's much more than that. Chi is the vital force that flows through all things -- humans, animals, plants, rocks, microbes, mountains. Chi connects us to all other things in the universe. This is the last article in this series, with the last two life skills, and three additional benefits that children receive from attending Karate classes, on a regular basis. Self-Confidence Many adults struggle with self esteem, so it is natural that children would also feel a lack of confidence. Also, children of parents who have self-confidence issues will copy their parent's example. This is one reason why the self-confidence CD we have in our Pro Shop is so popular with adults. This CD is actually a form of self-hypnosis for adults, but Karate is a much more effective self-confidence tool for active children. So, how does a child find self-confidence through Karate practice? Self esteem is...

First part of a three part discussion about Ninjutsu history and tradition. [Brian]: Thank you, Adrian. [Adrian]: Good morning, Brian. Martial Arts - Mental Attitude
How's your mental attitude? Has martial arts helped train your mind? Someone cuts you off in traffic. Yes, it's another one of those unsafe cellphone drivers. Then, at work, someone spills a little coffee on your papers. By accident. Back in the car, you notice that your son left gum stuck to the upholstery in back. All the little frustrations in life. But is any of this really worth getting upset over? No. Not in the scheme of life on this planet. It's unfortunate that 'crud' befalls us all. So, you get dumped on from time to time. Don't let that affect your overall mood. Maybe comment on the problem; get immersed in fixing the problem; even whine during the analysis of the problem, if you must...
An Insight Into Muay Thai Kick Boxing
The exact date muay Thai kick boxing was started is hard to narrow down, but it does date back all the way to medieval times. King Nareasen made it famous in 1560 AD when he was given a chance to fight for his freedom. King Nareasan was victorious, freed, and returned home where he declared the fighting style (then called Siamese style boxing) a national sport. The art of muay thai kick boxing is known as both a hard martial art and as "the deadly art." Muay thai kick boxing is a self defence art developed in Thailand and it enjoys immense popularity in many south-Asian countries as well. There is a wide variety of forms and styles, just like other styles of martial arts. Muay thai kick boxing is...
The Importance Of Effective Discipline In A...
One of the main reasons parents enroll their children in martial arts is discipline. You have seen it before. A parent enrolls their child in your class expecting you to suddenly and indefinitely whip them into shape so that they never answer back or behave badly. The problem is that their child has a limited attention span and uncontrollable energy. One of their favorite activities is to fall down on the floor or to hang on your leg. Your job is to make them a disciplined ninja warrior with perfect focus. This type of child can make or break you. They can destroy your very best lesson plan in an instant if you do not pay attention to discipline. Is it possible to meet his parents' expectations? Yes...

In 1979, Soke Masaaki Hatsumi, grandmaster of the nine martial traditions that make up the core training of the Warrior Concepts Mastery Programs, wrote a book entitled Mono-no-Mikata, Kangae-Kata ["Ways of Seeing, Ways of Thinking."] In it, he wrote a section called Deshi-iri which, translated from Japanese, means "Becoming a Student" or, more literally, "Entering an Apprenticeship." I'm sure that many of you have noticed that, in my articles, I write more about mental aspects than anything else. The purpose for this is that you should realize the importance of your attitude before you enter martial arts training, especially the kind of authentic warriorship training that I focus on in my...

What I Learned About Surviving Cancer
I recently talked to two women who have cancer. While we talked I made the mistake of referring to them as cancer victims. Politely and with a seemingly deep down calm and non-judgmental manner, they told me they do not consider themselves victims, but cancer survivors. We talked more about cancer and the things they feel have sustained and helped them. Lori was relatively new to the cancer world having been diagnosed in 2007. Alaina however, was an old hat navigating the cancer world, having been diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer approximately four years ago. My talk with Alaina and Lori was for an interview I was conducting on surviving cancer and here's what these two positive cancer...

Martial Arts and Daily Living
Focus Many students ask - what do I do with my eyes? Where do I look? Regardless what the practice is - standing, walking, moving - eyes are looking straight but your mind does not register information taken by your eyesight. The gaze is turned internally, observing your muscles, your legs, your hands, scanning every single part of your body with your mind. I used to go to crowded places to train for competitions - the more distraction the better it was. Well, no doubt, I learned how to focus and keep final destination constantly in my mind - perfection of the body posture, allowing the energy to flow freely like cleaning blocked pipes or dirty chimneys. Meridians are fresh, blood circulates to all...
All types of martial arts that were developed by the Chinese are considered an art form, but are still considered by some to be a sport that puts people in tune with their body. A person might begin learning them for safety reasons because they feel they need some form of self defense to keep them save in the urban environment where they live. The training for martial arts is most often pursued because the person desires to train their body and mind to be strong and alert. The art of Kung Fu comes from China and it is taught in various formats. The Chinese people have a great respect for this particular art form because it is part of their heritage. Kung Fu was developed from the standpoint that the...
